SUMMARY:Nationalism & Imperialism in the Gilded Age
DESCRIPTION:Great fortunes were made in the late 19th Century and with this growth of industrialism came a desire to expand markets. What were the arguments against imperialism and protectionism? This seminar will analyze these questions and consider the policies of Theodore Roosevelt. \nThis program will be conducted as a discussion\, utilizing primary source documents as the only readings\, and with the Discussion Leader facilitating the conversation instead of lecturing or presenting. Registrants\, therefore\, are highly encouraged to read all the documents in advance and come ready with questions. Teachers will receive a Letter of Attendance at the conclusion of the seminar.

SUMMARY:Civil Disobedience in American History
DESCRIPTION:This seminar examines the controversial topic of civil disobedience. Here we will consider whether civil disobedience could be an appropriate response to unjust laws in a liberal democracy. We begin by looking at the foundations of government set forth in the writings of John Locke and the Declaration of Independence. Our examination of this topic will then turn to two famous opposing sets of ideas on civil disobedience. By comparing\nseveral respective arguments\, our aim is to consider whether civil disobedience is compatible with the principles of government as defined by the Declaration of Independence. \nThis program will be conducted as a Socratic discussion\, utilizing primary source documents as the only readings\, and with the Discussion Leader facilitating the conversation\, instead of lecturing or presenting. Registrants\, therefore\, are highly encouraged to read all the documents in advance and come ready with questions. All attendees will receive a Letter of Attendance at the end of the seminar. \nClick here to register:\nhttps://teachingamericanhistory.org/seminar/civil-disobedience-in-american-history-fl/ \nRingling Map Parking Instructions

SUMMARY:The Freedom to Teach: Confronting Complex Themes in Contested Spaces
DESCRIPTION:“The Freedom to Teach: Confronting Complex Themes in Contested Spaces” is a non-partisan conference that seeks to bring history and civics educators from a variety of different backgrounds (including but not limited to higher education\, K-12 public education\, libraries\, museums\, administrative\, and college students) to share their perspectives on and experiences with teaching difficult topics. The event’s objective is to build bridges between these different constituencies\, share best practices\, outline common tasks\, and develop solutions to teaching complicated themes that are based on our shared educational mission. Those common values are based on the values of a liberal arts education and the related pursuit of academic truth\, whose mission transcends political boundaries. \nClick here to register:\nhttps://www.flagler.edu/campus-community/news/teaching-history/” rel=”noopener” target=”_blank”>https://www.flagler.edu/campus-community/news/teaching-history/”>https://www.flagler.edu/campus-community/news/teaching-history/
